- Day Three Morning Report
Friday 13 July 2007 - Anthony Foster IAAF
Ostrava, Czech Republic – In action from Friday
morning's session at the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships, Jamaica's
Nickel
Ashmeade and Brazilian Rosangela Santos, the 100m silver medallists
from Thursday, have booked places in Saturday's 200m semi-finals.
Ashmeade,
who took the 100m silver in 10.54 seconds behind countryman Dexter
Lee, was very easy in winning heat 7 of the Boys' 200m first
round in 21.80 seconds.
However, Ashmeade will start the semi-finals
as the fifth fastest qualifier behind Hiroyuki Kubota of Japan
(21.31), Bermuda Harold
Houston (21.67), Japanese Seija Clarke (21.76) and South African
Dean Swart (21.78).
World leader and favourite, Ramone McKenzie
of Jamaica took the 10th and final heat in 21.99 seconds.
Santos,
who ran a personal best 11.46 in the 100m final behind Great Britain's
Asha Philip, returned 24.96 for second in the 7th
and final heat of the Girls' 200m.
Romanian Andreea Ograzeanu won
heat 7 in 24.60, but American Chalonda Goodman (23.87) and Souheir
Bouali of Algeria with a personal best
23.92 are the only sub-24 seconds qualifiers.
Heptathlon starts
Samira Burkhardt of Germany with 15.20 leads the
qualifiers going into the final of the Girls' Shot Put. Belarus'
Aliona Hryshko
(14.91m), Rebecca O'Brien of USA (14.48m) and Germany's Sophia
Kleeberg (14.23m) were the other automatic qualifiers.
In the Triple
Jump qualification round, which saw eight of the 12 qualifiers
doing personal best distances, United States' Christian
Taylor leads the pack with 15.76m.
Stefan Tesng Ke Chen of Singapore
(15.69m) and United States' Bryce Lamb (15.54m) have the second
and third best jumps respectively.
Defending champion Romania's
Bianca Perie (63.27m) and Yuliet Hernandez of Cuba (58.45m) are
the top hammer throwers going into
the final.
After two events in the Girls' Heptathlon, Katerina Cachova
of Czech Republic leads with 1933 points ahead of team-mate Nikola
Oqrodnikova 1889 points.

The triple jump pit was the place to be. Both Christopher Taylor
(Sandy Creek, Tyrone, Ga.) and Bryce Lamb (Chandler, Az.) big person
best with Taylor the top qualifier at 51-8 ½ and Lamb recording
at 51-0 for the first and third best jumps of the competition.
There was a surprise in girls 200 as Chandra Goodman (Newnan, Ga.),
the world Youth leader at 23.42, replaced Erica Alexander (Clear
Brook, Houston, Tx.) and responded with 23.87 for the best mark
of the first round. Ashton Purvis (St. Elizabeth, Oakland, Ca.)

Danzell Fortson (Central, Keller, Tx.) was probably thinking as much about saving
energy as advancing to the next round as he settled into the blocks since he
would be running in the 400 final in the evening. Imagine the surprise when
Harold Houston of Bermuda, running in lane seven (one lane outside of Fortson)
with a best of just 21.94 set last year, got off to a quick start and was an
easy heat winner in a personal best of 21.67 for the second fastest time in
the opening round.. Fortson, who has a personal best of 21.55, let Houston
go and just made sure he finished in second to secure the final automatic qualifying
position, , which is exactly what he did in 22.11. Third place went to Dantago
Gurirab of Namibia in 22.15. Kenneth Gilstrap (Miller Grove, Lithonia, Ga.),
the surprise third place finisher in the 100 final, also was an easy qualifiers
in finishing second in his heat to Patrick Vosloo of South Africa, 21.90 to
22.06. Alexander Nordkvist of Sweden was third in 22.26. Ramone McKenzie of
Jamaica, the world Youth leader at 20.58 and the event favorite, expended just
enough energy to win the final heat in 21.99. Izzat Safer of Turkey was second
in 22.06. The closest race in the first round saw Hiroyuki Kubota of Japan,
who ran 21.17 last year, but had no notable performances this year, clocked
21.31 into a 1.6 meter per second wind to easily defeat Dean Swart of South
Africa at 21.78. Mindaugas Baliukonis of Lithuania was third at 21.82 and Antonio
Martinez next at 21.90 to take two of the four available automatic qualifying
slots. Ramil Guliyev of Azerbaijan, the second ranked Youth in the world at
20.67, was and easy heat winner in 21.85. Nickel Ashemeade of Jamaica, the
runner-up in the 100 final and ranked No. 3 here at 20.82, also won his heat
in 21.80.
Spier on site
Heat 1 (-1.5) - Where did he come from? Out of nowhere,
seemingly, Christophe Lemaitre, a 100 meter medallist last night,
strided
right past leader Oluwasgun Makinde of Canada in the last 10 meters
to win in 21.86 over Makinde's 22.11.
Heat 2 (-3.0) - Likourgos-Stefanos
Tsakonis of Greece "snuck
up" on everyone from lane to win in 22.05. All were fighting
a big wind, as Adel Al-Asseri of Saudi Arabia passed Tse-Ching
Liang (Taipei) at the end to get the second auto qualfier. It was
Al-Asseri's 22.09 to Liang's 22.23.
Heat 3 (-1.2) - The favorite,
Saiya Hane (Japan) was in lane 8, but he didn't let that placement
bother him, winning in 21.76.
Allistar Clarke of St. Kitts eased to a second place finish in
21.95.
Heat 4 (-2.0) - Two finalists in last night's 100 meters
were paired here. Patrick Vosloo (South Africa) in an outside line,
got the win over Kenneth Gilstrap 21.90 to 22.06.
Heat 5 (-1.0)
- This was a race totally dominated by Harold Houston of Bermuda,
running from lane 7 and clocking 21.67. Danzell Fortson,
attempting a very tough 400-200 double, was the second qualifier
at 22.11.
Heat 6 (-1.6) - Impressive in the middle of the track
was Ramil Guliyev of Azerbeijan, a 20.67 performer, winning in
21.85. Second
was Po-Yu Pan of Taipei in 22.08.
Heat 7 (-1.4) - Last night's 100m
silver medallist had an easy time of it, winning in 21.80. The
race hampered by two DQ's (false
starts). Second was local favorite, Martin Ricar of the Czech Republic
(22.24)
Heat 8 (-1.6) - Another good Japanese sprinter won here
easily. Hiroyuki Kubota ran 21.31 as Dean Swart of South Africa
eked out
second by .04 over Mindaugas Baliukonis of Lithuania, running 21.78.
Heat
9 (-2.0) - Vaclav Zich, a 100m finalist last night, won handily
at 22.04. Second, edging ultimate third placer Daniel Martin of
Australia by .01 for the auto qualifer, was Phillip Hayle of Canada
aat 22.23.
Heat 10 (-2.4 - "He's jogging" I said to Joy
Kamani. Ramone Mc Kenzie of Jamaica conserved energy like I've
seen from
no other with an amazingly easy 21.99. He is coming into the meet
with a 20.58 best. Second was Izzet Safer of Turkey at 22.06.

Talk about being “Stoked” , the U.S. kids really outdid themselves
in the qualify round. Christopher Taylor (Sandy Creek, Tyrone, Ga.), who had
the long jump final too look forward to in the evening session, opened up at
44-4 ¾ and then improved to 49-5 ½, just seven inches short of
his personal best. Taylor, jumping last in the order, stepped on to the runway
for his final jump and need to improve if he was to advance to the final. He
responded with an amazing 51-8 ½ jump for the best mark of the session
and ranks No. 2 on the yearly high school list. It was also a personal best by
18 inches. Bryce Lamb (Chandler, Az.), found himself in almost the same position
as Taylor in that he needed a big third jump to make the final. His best up to
that time had been 49-1, which was just left him just outside the top 12. Lamb
responded with a personal best of 51-0 jumping into a 0.9 meters per second wind.
It was a personal best by 17 inches and the third best jump of the competition.
Stefan Tseng Ke Chan of Singapore had the second best jump at 51-5 ¾ and
was a personal best by 16 inches. Gennadiy Chudinov of Russia, the No. 2 ranked
Youth in the world at 50-8 1/4, was the twelfth and final qualifier at 49-5 ½.
Ernesto Kindelan of Cuba, the world Youth leader at 51-11 ¾, was not entered.
Eleven of the 12 qualifiers meet the automatic qualifying standard of 49-6 ½.
Seven of those 11 did so in the final round.
Spier on-site
Group B - Bryce Lamb, who will be a junior at Chandler,
AZ high school in the fall, got near his PR of 49-7 on his first
jump (49-1, +1.8). Then came the monster jump of 51-0 (-0.9)
to make him the second leading qualifier in this group
behind Stephan
Tseng Ke Chen of Singapore (51-5.75). Lamb's jump represented
a one foot plus PR, and puts him the number 2 US performer
behind
Troy Doris (this was before Christian Taylor's equally "monster
jump" of 51-8.5).
Group A - Christian Taylor (Sandy Creek, Tyrone,
GA) started modestly with a jump of 44-4.75 (-0.2). He improved on
his second jump to
49-5.5 (+0.5), near his lifetime PB of 49-7.25. He was the next
to last competitor in the competition, and his mark would not get
him into the top 12 to qualify for the finals. Then, like Bryce
Lamb in Group B, he let go with a monster, covering 51-8.5 (+0.7),
more than two feet better than his previous best! That put him
in the lead overall going into the finals tomorrow. Taylor moves
to # 2 US, with Bryce Lamb #3. Coincidentally, the wind assistance
for each jumper's prior PR was identical to their new PR.
It was quite
a day for the U.S. triple jumpers, who showed a lot of composure,
getting their qualifier on their final jump.
They go into the finals ranked #1 and #3 overall.

You could excuse Chalonda Goodman (Newnan, Ga.) for being just a little bit excited
in the opening round since she was a late addition to the event, replacing
Erica Alexander (Clear Brook, Friendswood, Tx.). The year world Youth leaders
at 23.42, responded with a 23.87 to win the first heat in the fastest time
from the first round. Second was Liona Rebernik of Slovenia in 24.61. Ashton
Purvis (St. Elizabeth, Oakland, Ca.) easily won her heat in 24.12 running into
a 1.5 meter per second wind. Souheir Bouali of Algeria won her heat in 23.92
and was the only other runner under 24 seconds. Two others to watch are Nivea
Smith of Bahamas and Barbara Leonicio of Brazil. Smith, with a best of 23.45,
won her heat in 24.30 but Leonicio, who has a best of 23.62, finished just
third in her heat but was a time qualifier at 24.80.

Heat 1 (-1.5) - Chalonda Goodman (Newnan, GA) makes
her debut at the meet in the first heat. Her bad start (second
slowest) didn't seem to matter as she totally dominated the race,
winning in 23.87.
Heat 2 (2.0) - Olivia Tauro of Australia was pushed
slightly by Jura Levy of Jamaica, but got the win, 24.49 to 24.88.
Heat 3 (0.0) - An easy run for Nivea Smith of the Bahamas, winning
in 24.30, .58 ahead of Gabriela Laleva of Bulgaria.
Heat 4 (-1.5)
- Ashton Purvis, a bit more composed after her disappointing 100m
final, took charge here early, winning in 24.12. Another 100m
finalist, Alyssa Conley of South Africa, was a close second in
24.39.
Heat 5 (-0.3) - A very good race and a bit of a surprise. Elza
Vildanova of Russia let convincingly for 170 meters while Souheir
Bouali of Algeria began a steady move to gain on, and eventually,
pass Vildanova. Its was Bouali's 23.92 (a PB) to Vildanova's 24.09.
Heat
6 (-0.6) - The leader of the first half of the race was Regina Kolevatova
